The Ultimate Guide to Raw Denim
what is raw denim?
Raw denim refers to denim that has not undergone any pre-washing or shrinking. It is denim in its purest, most natural state. Unlike most jeans, which are pre-washed, sandblasted, or artificially distressed before reaching the customer, raw denim remains untreated after the dyeing process.
Because of this, raw denim is typically stiff at first and rich in colour. As it is worn over time, the fabric gradually softens and moulds to the wearer’s body, and develops unique fades.
Raw denim is often confused with selvedge denim, but the two are not the same. The key difference lies in how the fabric is constructed: raw denim refers to the treatment of the fabric, while selvedge denim refers to the method used to weave it.
Another common misconception is that raw denim has to be heavyweight. While this is often the case, raw denim simply refers to denim that is unwashed and untreated, and it can be found in a wide range of weights.
A brief history on raw denim
Raw denim dates back to the late 1800s, when Levi Strauss & Co. and Jacob Davis patented the first riveted work pants for miners, cowboys, and labourers. Made from sturdy, unwashed denim, these jeans were built for durability, not fashion. Workers wore them hard, and the fabric softened and aged with time, naturally creating the worn-in look people still love today.
In the mid-20th century, raw denim evolved from workwear to a cultural icon. It became synonymous with rebellion and authenticity, worn by everyone from soldiers to rock and roll legends. It wasn’t until the late 1970s and 1980s that pre-washed, pre-distressed jeans became mainstream, catering to shoppers who wanted instant comfort and fades without the break-in period.
WHY CHOOSE RAW DENIM?
1. It Lasts (a Lot) Longer
Raw denim is usually made from heavier, denser fabrics than most high-street jeans, which means it can take years of wear without thinning or tearing.
2. It’s Better for the Planet
Most jeans are pre-washed or treated, which uses huge amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. Raw denim skips this entire process, cutting the environmental impact significantly.
3. It Looks Better with Age
Unlike jeans that come pre-faded (and look the same on everyone), raw denim develops character over time. The fades, creases, and wear patterns are 100% yours.
Raw denim care
Raw denim requires a little extra care, but it’s simple once you know how:
- Try to wear your raw denim jeans several times before the first wash. This helps the fabric shape to your body and develop natural fades.
- For small marks, use a damp cloth or soft brush with mild soap instead of a full wash.
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Turn inside out to preserve the colour and never tumble dry.
- To refresh your jeans, hang them outside or in a steamy bathroom to air out.
