DENIM

Want to learn more about raw denim? see our ultimate guide to raw denim

Most of our jeans are made from end-of-line raw denim that would otherwise go to landfill. Raw denim is denim in its purest form, it hasn’t gone through any pre-washing or shrinking processes (making it even better for the environment). Raw denim can feel stiff at first but loosens up as it is broken in. So if your new purchase feels a bit rigid on the first wear don't worry, it will soften and mould to your body over time.

QUICK CARE GUIDE (IF YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO READ THE WHOLE PAGE)

Raw Denim
Raw denim is untreated and unwashed, making it more prone to shrinking. Gentle washing and careful handling are recommended.

Wash Sparingly
Denim doesn’t require frequent washing. Washing less often helps preserve the fabric, colour and natural wear patterns.

Hand Wash Cold
We highly recommend hand washing your denim in cold water, especially raw denim. This is the gentlest way to clean your jeans while maintaining their colour, fabric and fit.

Air Dry Only
Do not tumble dry. Hang or lay your jeans flat to air dry to help maintain their shape and longevity.

Dye Transfer
Dark and raw denim may release excess dye, particularly during the first few wears and washes. Wash separately and avoid contact with light fabrics or surfaces until the colour has settled.

WASHING

Denim should not be washed often at all. Unless you need to set the dye, we recommend wearing your jeans several times before the first wash. Washing too often can cause fading.

As a general guideline, wash every 10 wears at the very most, even less often for heavy weight raw denim. Deal with any small marks or stains by spot cleaning them. If they need a refresh, hang them outside to air out.

When it does come to washing them: turn your jeans inside out and hand wash your denim purchase in cold water to minimise any shrinking and fading. Shrinking is a normal occurrence when washing denim because cotton naturally shrinks when exposed to water. Raw denim, which has not been pre-shrunk, is therefore more prone to shrinking with it's first wash.

If you choose to machine wash; choose a cold (20 degrees or less) and delicate cycle. Turn the garment inside out to prevent fading and avoid using fabric softeners. These can leave a residue on denim and change its natural texture. Always wash with similar colours. Please remember that raw denim has not been pre-shrunk so washing in higher temperatures or in the machine will cause the denim to shrink more than usual, particularly in length.

DRYING

Air dry - never use a tumble dryer.

Using a tumble dryer can cause shrinkage and unnecessary wear. Air drying helps maintain the original fit, fabric structure and colour.

If ironing, turn inside out and use a low heat.

DYE

Dyed denim, particularly raw and dark / rich coloured denims like black or indigo, can bleed and transfer dye. To avoid dye transfer from these denims you may want to soak your denim piece on it own in cold water, before it's first wear. For rich indigo and black denims avoid making contact with light coloured surfaces & clothing before washing and please note that some dye transfer may occur even after the first wash.

With dyed raw denim, fading and creasing can naturally occur during washing. This is an inherent characteristic of raw denim, particularly if the garment is not turned fully inside out or if it is machine washed. To help prevent fading and maintain the richness of the colour, we always recommend washing the denim inside out and following our cold hand wash only care instructions.

If you are concerned about dye transfer or want to prevent the colour from fading, you can set the dye in raw denim by soaking in a mixture of cold water, salt and vinegar. After soaking for about an hour, rinse with cold water (until the vinegar smell is gone) and hang dry.
